How WOWPS Works

The Women of the World Poetry Slam brings together elite competitive performance poets from countries all over the globe, including the United States, Canada, Germany, and France.  In this competition, poets compete in preliminary competitions (referred to as “bouts”) over two nights.  The top performers from those days move on to Finals, where one poet is crowned WOWPS Champion!

Preliminary Bouts – Thursday, March 5th and Friday, March 6th

7pm & 9pm

Poets determine their venue and order for preliminary bouts in a randomized draw.  Each poet competes in a 2-round bout on both Thursday and Friday nights, with different time restrictions for each round of each bout.  Thursday bouts will feature 4 minute and 1 minute poems, and Friday bouts will feature 2 minute and 3 minute poems.  The top 14 poets from the preliminary bouts advance to finals.

Finals – Saturday, March 7th

7pm

The top 14 poets from two nights of preliminary bouts compete in Finals.

The lively Deep Ellum entertainment district is known for its vibrant street murals, quirky art galleries and long-time concert venues for indie and blues. Brewpubs, cocktail bars and Tex-Mex eateries draw a boisterous crowd on weekends, while edgy, experimental drama dominates the program at the time-tested Undermain Theatre, in a warehouse basement. The Deep Ellum Brewing Company offers tours, tastings and events.
